INSPIRATION FOR MY HORTUS BY NIGHT CANVASSES
On January 7 2019 I visited the Hortus by Night in de Hortus Amsterdam. And my year could not have started any better! I was totally enchanted by the fairy tale magic created by all the different coloured lights shining on the plants. It make me feel like I was off on some other worldly adventure. And it made me realise that in a different light all bets are off.
Back home I started making some sketches and soon I started painting. A couple of months later I ended up with a total of 12 canvas originals. It was the first time I had created so much art in such a short period of time. I loved every minute of it!
Afterwards I decided to split the series in two: Hortus by Night 1 and 2. The first series captures the fairy tale magic I experienced in the garden that night. While the second series explores colourful plants in moonlit greenhouses.
SPECS OF THESE CANVAS ORIGINALS
For these six canvas originals I used oil paint and ink. All six paintings are 75 x115 cm / 23.5 x 45.3 inch and come unframed. But of course, if you’d like yours framed, please contact me so we can discuss your preferences.
THE HORTUS BY NIGHT 1 COLLECTION
Since the painting went so smooth and quick I wasn’t ready to let go of this inspiration once I was done. So I decided to take it one step further and translate the paintings into patterns. The patterns I printed on limited edition warm cashmere scarves and soft satin cushion covers. I also made every pattern into handmade table linens.
Through collaborations with modern glass artist Elise Neve from Studio Glashelder and custom carpet agency TON Design the collection also includes exclusive jewellery and tapestries. You can check the whole Hortus by Night 1 Collection here.
